Seeing the child's fluorosis would make anybody I would have thought think twice about this practice.

So dentists believe that drinking fluoride is more effective than fluoride toothpaste and mouthwashes since the water mixes with saliva. Then how do they explain the action of toothpaste and mouthwashes, when they remain in the mouth for some time without being ingested?
During a recent visit to Southampton, Prof Paul Connett demonstrated clearly with a glass of water that when drinking it, the water hits the palate before going straight down the throat into the stomach, barely touching the teeth. He explained that the dental fluorosis that over 40% of children develop in fluoridated areas, is not due to the teeth coming into direct contact with the treated water, but is a reflection of the damage to the bones due to the systemic toxicity resulting from daily ingestion of this rat poison.
Presumably drinking fluoridated water also surpasses the use of a toothbrush.
