To prevent tooth decay it is a good idea to ensure that everyone has easy access to an NHS dentist and that dentists carry out preventative work. This includes showing patients how to clean their teeth correctly, which is not as easy as it sounds! There should be more periodentists (gum specialists) provided. Some areas have none, het more adult teeth are lost from gum disease than tooth decay. A Lanarkshire dentist halved tooth decay by getting children to consume less sweets and fizzy drinks. The government should get food manufacturers to reduce excess sugar in their foods.
