Letter addressed to Andrew Mortimer & Barry Cockcroft

Andrew Mortimer
Director of Public Health
Southampton PCT 22nd February 2008.

Dear Mr Mortimer

I have observed that there is a great flurry of activity by dental and government departments to impose compulsory water fluoridation on most of the UK. I have read through a document you recently wrote. I am sorry to say that you can only have been informed of limited data of water fluoridation. For instance you quote the York Review (2000). Are you aware that the York review somehow managed to exclude over 40 important studies, which completely fulfilled the York’s criteria for inclusion? An example the” Teotia review of India” ? Even so in the words of the York Review ‘they could find no grade A studies (grade A being high quality / bias unlikely) demonstrating anti caries effects of fluoridation”. Are you also aware of the immense literature, which clearly illuminates the true toxicity of most fluoride compounds? The released fluoride ion is toxic to most forms of life including us human beings. The natural calcium fluoride doesn’t attempt by nature to combine such ions. Even so many studies reviews from India completely clearly illustrate the toxic effects of even calcium fluoride of levels above 4 parts per million. Enough!

My concern in writing to you is that I have been informed that virtually no background studies have been made of fluoride levels in this countries water and food supplies and even in our bodies. Testing fluoride levels and hence toxic levels do not seem to be part of the National Health Service.

Considering the statement by the national Academy of Sciences in the USA in 2006 (507 page document) in my opinion we shall be in great danger by further adding sodium hexafluorosilic acid - H2S2F6 or whatever compounds to our water supplies. Are we going to exceed such levels? The USA review consider that levels in excess of 4 parts per million of fluoride compounds in the water are a danger to human health. In my opinion we already have sufficient fluoride compounds n the environment to fulfil any requirements by the dental heath experts. Yes, there is no doubt at all that we do have bad dental health / caries problems but there are other methods to of sorting this out. I have been involved in this issue for 15 years and there is a vast quantity of literature, which clearly demonstrates the dangers of water fluoridation. I have tried to write a balanced letter and not a piece of extremist literature.

Yours sincerely

PS. Just in case you have time to read it I enclose an interesting bit of literature concerning examples of acute poisoning from water fluoridation.

Thank you Anthony for your contribution to the blog.

I did not know that York had excluded as many as 40 important pieces of research but I was aware that their protocol had changed from, “the effects of fluoride on health”, to “a systematic scientific review on water fluoridation”. This change led to a very narrow examination which addressed only one source of fluoride exposure. As a result, the York ~Review attracted severe criticism from international scientists and others.
